NH Frankfurt Niederrad Hotel – A Quiet and Convenient Airport Location, but Little Around the Hotel

Location
I was planning to spend a weekend in Frankfurt and was looking for a hotel that would be reasonably close to the city centre while also being convenient for Frankfurt Airport. During my research, I was strongly advised against staying right in the city centre, particularly because some areas can feel less comfortable in the evening and at night. In the end, a friend recommended the NH Frankfurt Niederrad Hotel, which turned out to be an interesting option, located roughly between the airport and central Frankfurt. I found a good deal on booking.com which was also similar on Trip.com.
The hotel is situated in a business district, surrounded mainly by office buildings. During the week, the area is apparently very busy with business travellers and employees, but at the weekend it becomes almost completely deserted. When I arrived on Friday afternoon, check-in was quick and trouble-free, and the receptionist explained that the area is primarily a business district. She also mentioned that it would be extremely quiet over the weekend, which was actually perfect for me.
However, there is very little to do within walking distance. There are offices around the hotel and a cemetery right next door, which might be worth exploring if you are interested in that sort of thing! Across the road, there is a Lidl supermarket, which is very convenient if you need drinks, food or other supplies. Keep in mind that Lidl is closed on Sundays.
For anything else, you will need to take a taxi or use Uber. The location is nevertheless very convenient when it comes to transportation: the hotel is approximately 15 minutes by car from Frankfurt Airport and roughly the same distance from Frankfurt Central Station and the city centre.
The Hotel
The NH Frankfurt Niederrad is a large, modern and rather quiet building. There is parking available, and the entrance area includes the reception, restaurant and bar.
One particularly practical feature is the small shop located at the reception. It offers drinks and a selection of useful everyday items, such as toothbrushes, sanitary products, as well as chips, snacks and cereal bars. It is a small detail, not very cheap, but very convenient if you need something outside normal shopping hours.
The hotel also has conference and meeting facilities, which makes perfect sense given its location in a business district.
The Room
My room was on the fifth floor. It was a medium-sized room overlooking the street, but it was surprisingly quiet, and everything was clean and well maintained.
There was a large bed made up of two twin mattresses, plenty of lighting, a safe, a refrigerator, a complimentary bottle of water, and a kettle with coffee and tea-making facilities.
The air-conditioning control unit was a little outdated and didn’t seem to work properly. The thermostat had no noticeable effect on the room temperature, while the fan seemed to run constantly at maximum speed regardless of the fan setting selected. The air conditioning was also a little noisy, but at least it managed to cool the room, which was welcome as it was quite hot outside.
The Wi-Fi was also reasonably fast and worked without any problems during my stay.
One thing worth knowing is that the hotel does not automatically clean the rooms every day. At check-in, guests are asked whether they would like their room cleaned the following day or every two or four days. The hotel explains this as part of its environmental policy, and the frequency is essentially up to the guest.
Bathroom
The bathroom was perfectly adequate for a short stay and was clean and functional. The amenities were fairly limited, with shampoo, soap provided, along with one shower cap and a hair dryer.
Nothing luxurious, but everything I needed was there and I had no complaints.
Breakfast
Breakfast is served in the restaurant next to the reception and starts at 7:00 a.m. at weekends.
It is a buffet with a reasonable selection of food, including cold cuts, some vegetables, different types of bread, fruit juices, coffee, omelettes, sausages, cakes, cereals, yoghurt, jams and chocolate paste.
There was plenty of choice, particularly for anyone who enjoys a traditional continental-style breakfast. However, at 25€ (on booking.com), the price felt far too high to me for what was actually offered. The buffet was quite basic compared with what I would expect for that price.
Overall Experience
Overall, I had a pleasant and comfortable weekend at the NH Frankfurt Niederrad Hotel. The room was clean and quiet, check-in was efficient, the Wi-Fi worked well, and the hotel’s location is particularly convenient for Frankfurt Airport.
The main disadvantage is the surroundings. This is very much a business district, so there is virtually nothing to see or do within walking distance, especially at the weekend. If your goal is to explore Frankfurt on foot and enjoy restaurants, bars and sightseeing right outside your hotel, this would probably not be the ideal choice.
On the other hand, if you need a quiet hotel between Frankfurt Airport and the city, particularly for a business trip, a short stopover or an early flight, the NH Frankfurt Niederrad Hotel is a practical option.
Would I stay here again? Yes, particularly if I needed to be close to the airport. For a holiday focused on discovering Frankfurt, however, I would probably choose a location further away from the city centre and explore the surrounding areas instead.
